Chickering Square Piano

Date: Ca. 1881

Serial #:  57918

Keyboard compass:      85 notes  7 octaves

Keyboard covering: Mostly original ivory; all original ebony sharps.

Cabinet: Has double molding around bottom of rosewood case.  Typical elegant Chickering style music rack.  Cabriole legs and carved pedal lyre.  To be refinished.

Dimensions:  81"  x  40 ½"

Action:  Double bearing agraffes throughout; this was a patented advancement that gave the strings much better bearing and a higher tensioned scale was possible.  Action is typical American late square type; two pedals, damper and moderator (soft).

A good solid restorable piano by one of the top builders.  This is a very late one and is getting close to the period when square pianos ceased to be built.  Many times useless things were patented and flaunted to be something wonderful; but the double bearing agraffe in this case certainly was a technical improvement.  Tonally, this probably is the finest square that Chickering ever built.
