Mathushek 1876 Square Piano

Date: Ca. 1876

Serial #:  9033

Keyboard compass:      88 notes 7 1/3 octaves

Keyboard covering:  New off-white synthetic naturals with original ebony sharps.

Cabinet: Rosewood case with top molding and scalloped molding around bottom; has carved fruit on cabriole legs and pedal lyre.  To be completely refinished.  Has cut out music rack much like a Steinway.  The largest size square usually built.

Dimensions:  81" x  39"

Action: Typical square action with overhead dampers in rack with extensions.  Two pedals, left is moderator, right is damper.

This is the "Orchestral" model, which in both technical design and tone was the finest square piano ever designed or built!  This is the ultimate in a square piano; the scaling of the strings is a radical departure from all others and the tone throughout the scale approaches that of a modern 7' grand piano.  Strings are on three levels; bass, tenor, and treble bridges; tri-strung in treble section with a capo bar cast into the plate.  If the old look is desired, combined with a modern quality sound, then this is the only square piano that can deliver!
